Meet EUROPE’s TOP data portability projects!

First open call results are out! get to know the 11 projects embarking on the dapsi journey

Applications for the first cohort of the Data Portability & Services Incubator (DAPSI) closed on 22 April 2020 with an impressive number of 182 submissions, coming from 33 different countries. With so many great solutions presented the evaluation process was not easy but ended up with the selection of 11 high potential projects to solve data and service portability challenges.

“I was actually super surprised about the number of high quality proposals.” said Nextcloud CEO and DAPSI Advisory Board Member Frank Karlitschek. “The majority of submissions were very good and detailed and creative. It was really hard to select the right proposals but at the end I’m very happy with the final list.”

THE dapsi journey

DAPSI will support the selected projects through a 9-month incubation programme where experts in diverse fields will provide a successful working methodology, access to top infrastructure, training in business and data related topics, coaching, mentoring, and a vibrant ecosystem. On top of that, each DAPSI project can receive up to €150k equity-free funding.

In the two-phase programme, the projects will develop advanced solutions in the Data Portability field to make it significantly easier for citizens to have any data which is stored with one service provider transmitted directly to another provider. From September 2020 to February 2021 (Kick-Start phase) they will develop a solution related to a specific use case. The best projects will progress to the second phase (Booster phase), from March to June 2021, where the use cases will be fostered to evolve into solid projects to gain enough traction for deployment and get ready for the market.

“I have ambitious expectations for this programme. We will distribute 5.6M€ to engage top-notch innovators developing solutions with high potential to reach the market in many cases.” Said DAPSI’s Coordinator, Sara Mateo.

What is dapsi?

The Data Portability and Services Incubator (DAPSI) is a EU funded project, under the European Commission’s Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative, to empower top internet innovators to develop human-centric solutions, addressing the challenge of personal data portability on the internet, as foreseen under the GDPR, and make it significantly easier for citizens to have any data which is stored with one service provider transmitted directly to another provider.

The project is operated by 6 experienced partners that will involve the selected teams in a vibrant ecosystem: Zabala Innovation Consulting (Spain), F6S (Ireland), Cap Digital (France), IMT Starter (France), Fraunhofer IAS (Germany), and Engineering (Italy), and has received funding from the European Union’s H2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement no 871498.
