Get funding to join the Next Generation Internet

The Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative has launched four new Open Calls. The calls provide funding opportunities for cutting-edge Research and Innovation in Next Generation Internet (NGI) technologies.

NGI’s four new open calls offer support to talents from academic research groups, high-tech startups and SMEs working on building a better internet. The topics covered in the NGI Open Calls include Privacy & Trust Enhancing Technologies, Decentralised Data Governance and Next Generation Search & Discovery.

Olivier Bringer, Deputy and Acting Head of the Next Generation Internet Unit at the European Commission, says:

The European Commission’s Next Generation Internet initiative is committed to advancing research, concepts and technologies that develop a better, more human-centred internet faithful to values commonly shared by Europeans.

“By making this funding available, we’re providing concrete support for advanced developments in the crucial areas of privacy and trust, decentralised technologies and search and discovery.”

The NGI open calls offer funding based on short research cycles, targeting the most promising ideas. Newcomers to the Horizon 2020 scene are very much welcomed and encouraged to send proposals.

The four NGI Open Calls are:

NGI Trust: Privacy & Trust Enhancing Technologies – funding up to €200,000 (under conditions) for technical innovation in privacy enhancing technologies that are bootstrapping trust at the protocol level using technologies such as IoT, AI and cryptography. https://dev.ngi.eu/opencalls/ngi_trust-open-call/

LEDGER: Decentralised Technologies – funding up to €200,000 to make of data a common good owned by citizens where the wealth created by data-driven platforms is equally distributed using technologies such as blockchain, distributed ledger and peer-to-peer networks. https://dev.ngi.eu/opencalls/ledger/

NGI Zero Discovery: Next Generation Search & Discovery – funding of €5,000 – €50,0000 for project proposals that will help put powerful new search technology in the hands of future generations, as building blocks for a fair and democratic society and an open economy that benefits all. https://nlnet.nl/discovery/

NGI Zero PET: Privacy & Trust Enhancing Technologies – funding of €5,000 – €50,000 for technologies aimed at providing people with new instruments that allow them more agency – and assist us with fulfilling the human need of keeping some private and confidential context and information private and confidential. https://nlnet.nl/PET/

Most of the NGI open calls also provide opportunities for scaling up and further funding. Take a look at our current Open Calls and subscribe to the NGI newsletter to be kept informed of future NGI Open Calls, events and important NGI news.
