NGI Workshop at the Web Summit, Lisbon

The Next Generation Internet (NGI) team will be at the Web Summit 2018 in Lisbon from 5-8 November, and will host a workshop at the event on Tuesday 6 November to introduce the NGI initiative and outline EU funding opportunities.

The Web Summit is one of the world’s biggest IT conferences, with 70,000 attendees expected representing a diverse range of  industries including ICT, media, entertainment, fashion, sport and politics. Headline speakers include internet inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee, European competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager, Microsoft President Brad Smith and FC Barcelona footballer Ronaldinho.

The NGI community will be together in the workshop: Building together the Next Generation Internet (NGI), funding opportunities for internet innovators, which will be held in the Startup workshop area, FIL1, on Tuesday 6 November from 3pm to 4pm.

The NGI workshop will introduce the Next Generation Internet initiative, which was launched by the European Commission in 2016 to shape a better internet for the future – an internet for humans. Developers, start-ups, researchers are invited to join the NGI team to discuss tech, policy and business challenges as well as to discover new funding opportunities.

The workshop will provide the opportunity to share knowledge with leading experts from a variety of disciplines, including interactive technologies, artificial intelligence, IoT, hyper-connected sociality, etc., and will be highly interactive.

NGI workshop speakers will include: Olivier Bringer, Stefano Foglietta and Jean-Luc Dorel, all from the European Commission. They will be joined by Michiel Leenaars from NLNet, Isabella De Michelis from ErnieAPP and Monique Calisti from Martel Innovate, who will also act as moderator.

Monique Calisti, Martel Innovate and HUB4NGI“We’re excited to present the Next Generation Internet initiative at the Web Summit in Lisbon,” said Monique Calisti, CEO of Martel Innovate and HUB4NGI Project Coordinator.

“It’s a great opportunity for a wide audience to discover how Europe is leading and shaping the global movement towards a fairer, more trustworthy, democratic and decentralised internet that puts humans in the centre of technology development. It is also an excellent chance for researchers and innovators to discover how they can get their research funded.”

The NGI initiative will be present for the whole duration of the Web Summit at the European Commission-branded booth. There will also be an NGI Salon on Wednesday 7 November from 6pm-7.30pm at the Social Innovation Village, entitled: You have ten years to save the Planet – A Millennials’ narrative for the Next Generation Internet.
